In South Gloucestershire, UK, farmer Winston Howes created a heart-shaped meadow of oak trees after the sudden death of his wife Janet 17 years ago. The couple were married for 33 years.
Howes installed the oak saplings in a six-acre field leaving a perfect heart shape in the middle, with the point facing in the direction of Janet’s childhood home. He says, “I planted several thousand oak trees and daffodils in the middle that come up in the spring — it looks great. I go out there from time to time, just to sit and think about things.”
The meadow cannot be seen from the road and remained a family secret until a hot air balloonist took this photograph. Howes created a unique and enduring memorial, a sacred space permanently dedicated to someone much loved and much missed.
